  • Joseph Smith, compiled by Joseph Fielding Smith, "Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith", p. 71-72

Joseph Smith felt keenly the lack of records of the prior decisions which had been made. Such records would have been of great value in resolving future difficulties and further would have bolstered the testimonies born of the dealings of God. It is wisdom to appoint one or more record-keepers to record every decision made.
If we fail to note down important decisions, we may be driven to impossible difficulties, for lack of the faith or knowledge which such records would have provided. God also may be angered with us when we fail to record those things which he has revealed to us.
The time shall come when such records will be necessary to save ourselves from the snares laid down by our enemies.
