Joseph Smith warns, (in relation to his having directed the saints to settle a matter by means of a general conference, while he is in jail) that they should beware of an aspiring spirit "which spirit has oftentimes urged men forward to make foul speeches, and influence the church to reject milder counsels, and has eventually been the means of bringing much death and sorrow upon the Church."
