The word, Sidom, appears to be playing on the idea of shin-dalet-mem, which conveys the idea of burning, generally in agricultural contexts to describe a burned field, or a blighted field. This root is likely to be similarly played on in the story of Sodom and Gomorrah.
Sidm, itself, is not destroyed, but it is the dwelling of refugees from Ammonihah, many of whom had family burned alive by the wicked inhabitants of the city. Similar to Sodom, Ammonihah is about to be destroyed. In addition, we find Zeezrom here, "burning" with a fever.
