- Joseph Smith reached out to Martin Harris, because the Urim and Thummim showed him Martin Harris would be the person that would help him publish and translate the book. (Presumably, this was after he had met Martin Harris.) Both Lucy Mack Smith and Martin Harris relate this detail separately.

- Martin Harris's first task was to take a facsimile (transcript) of the back page of the plates to learned men to see if any of them could translate it.n The evidence suggests that Joseph Smith was aware of Isaiah's prophecy that would be fulfilled by doing this, and because of the prophecy, he knew that it was also a prerequisite to him gaining the power to translate. Don Bradley, the author, thinks that Charles Anthon, being a well educated and religious man, who's work shows a thorough knowledge of the Bible, was probably also aware of the prophecy that was being fulfilled, and stepped right into it anyway, because, in his pride, he didn't take Joseph Smith and Martin Harris seriously. Martin Harris also seems to have made a second trip to visit Charles Anthon with some of the preliminary translation work done for that same page.
