Zelph

The suggestion is made that the story of Zelph is allegorical, and that Zelph was intended to represent the "self", a soldier serving under the leadership of a prophet.

Notes

Joseph Smith's identification of a body buried in a Hopewell mound. Joseph identified Zelph as a Lamanite that had converted and served under the prophet Onandagus. Joseph identified this as the last burial in the mound.

Another skeleton dug up from this mound was dated to about 91 AD. This was expected to be one of the last burials. However, future excavations found artifacts and dated the mound to between 100 BC and 500 AD.
