Relics are an interesting phenomenon. For much of my life I would have considered relics with any real power to be an absurdity. With various churches today, and throughout Christian history, claiming to have bones, hair, shrouds, and other remnants of historical Christanity, the idea of relics always seemed to be associated with these dubious claims. To be fair, some of the relics listed below have never been said to offer any kind of godly power. However, some have. In learning more about the Nephites, and in considering more closely, the ancient Israelites, it appears that they had, and used relics as an important component of their religious observance and temple worship. Indeed, just as I don't understand the meaning and purpose of the Lord's use of ordinances as key elements of his plan of salvation, I also struggle to understand why the Lord would create physical manifestations of his power in otherwise plain physical objects. Nevertheless, I believe ordinances are a real and essential thing despite not understanding why, and scriptural record says that there were real and sometimes powerful relics among the Israelites, Josephites, and even in this modern dispensation. I endeavor here to make note of these relics and I will add some speculative but noteworthy relics of other provenance.
The relics of the Israelites and the Josephites were connected to temple worship, much like ordinances are. Temple worship itself is a physical home created for God. Many ancient Israelite temples housed relics, and often a stone, referred to as a standing stone, to represent God's presence. All of these things appear to suggest to us that the physical world matters with God, as well as the spiritual, and in a way that isn't necessarily obvious.
