The Plates of Nephi

38) And now, verily I say unto you, that an account of those things that you have written, which have gone out of your hands, is engraven upon the plates of Nephi;
39) Yea, and you remember it was said in those writings that a more particular account was given of these things upon the plates of Nephi.
40) And now, because the account which is engraven upon the plates of Nephi is more particular concerning the things which, in my wisdom, I would bring to the knowledge of the people in this account—
41) Therefore, you shall translate the engravings which are on the plates of Nephi, down even till you come to the reign of king Benjamin, or until you come to that which you have translated, which you have retained;
42) And behold, you shall publish it as the record of Nephi; and thus I will confound those who have altered my words.
43) I will not suffer that they shall destroy my work; yea, I will show unto them that my wisdom is greater than the cunning of the devil.
44) Behold, they have only got a part, or an abridgment of the account of Nephi.
45) Behold, there are many things engraven upon the plates of Nephi which do throw greater views upon my gospel; therefore, it is wisdom in me that you should translate this first part of the engravings of Nephi, and send forth in this work.
46) And, behold, all the remainder of this work does contain all those parts of my gospel which my holy prophets, yea, and also my disciples, desired in their prayers should come forth unto this people.
Two kinds, the small plates and the larger plates.
Contents described and relationship to the book of mormon explained.
Nephi abridges father's record and then makes an account of his own life.
11) Therefore he took the records which were engraven on the plates of brass, and also the plates of Nephi, and all the things which he had kept and preserved according to the commandments of God, after having translated and caused to be written the records which were on the plates of gold which had been found by the people of Limhi, which were delivered to him by the hand of Limhi;
20) And now, as I said unto you, that after king Mosiah had done these things, he took the plates of brass, and all the things which he had kept, and conferred them upon Alma, who was the son of Alma; yea, all the records, and also the interpreters, and conferred them upon him, and commanded him that he should keep and preserve them, and also keep a record of the people, handing them down from one generation to another, even as they had been handed down from the time that Lehi left Jerusalem.
And thus ended the eighteenth year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi. And thus ended the record of Alma, which was written upon the plates of Nephi.
And Nephi, the son of Helaman, had departed out of the land of Zarahemla, giving charge unto his son Nephi, who was his eldest son, concerning the plates of brass, and all the records which had been kept, and all those things which had been kept sacred from the departure of Lehi out of Jerusalem.
9) But behold there are records which do contain all the proceedings of this people; and a shorter but true account was given by Nephi.
10) Therefore I have made my record of these things according to the record of Nephi, which was engraven on the plates which were called the plates of Nephi.
11) And behold, I do make the record on plates which I have made with mine own hands.
7) But behold the plates of Nephi do contain the more part of the things which he taught the people.
11) Behold, I was about to write them, all which were engraven upon the plates of Nephi, but the Lord forbade it, saying: I will try the faith of my people.
19) And it came to pass that Nephi, he that kept this last record, (and he kept it upon the plates of Nephi) died, and his son Amos kept it in his stead; and he kept it upon the plates of Nephi also.
21) And it came to pass that Amos died also, (and it was an hundred and ninety and four years from the coming of Christ) and his son Amos kept the record in his stead; and he also kept it upon the plates of Nephi; and it was also written in the book of Nephi, which is this book.
And behold, ye shall take the plates of Nephi unto yourself, and the remainder shall ye leave in the place where they are; and ye shall engrave on the plates of Nephi all the things that ye have observed concerning this people.

Notes

There are at least 3 plates of Nephi. There are the large plates of Nephi. There are the small plates of Nephi. Both of these were created by Nephi, son of Lehi.

Nephi, son of Nephi, also had plates referred to a Plates of Nephi.

Based on D&C 10, and the interesting features at the end of Words of Mormon, it seems that there is a section of the Gold Plates referred to as the Plates of Nephi (probably based on the small plates of Nephi; a copy; rather than being the actual original small plates of Nephi), which Joseph Smith was able to distinguish, and which was only translated in part. It would seem that after including the original record from the small plates, Mormon added his own record to the plates termed in D&C 10, the Plates of Nephi, and also a terse summary of Nephite history after that point. Joseph Smith was commanded to only translate up until the point that said terse history covered the end of what was lost in the Lost 116 Pages. Hence, and considering the abrupt end of Words of Mormon, we expect that Words of Mormon, as originally written, had more. The Lord indicates that the plates of Nephi was a more complete record of the details that were most important to be restored. (Doctrines and revelations.) The Lost 116 Pages would have had less of that.
